SafeReel vs AWS Rekognition for video moderation

Amazon Rekognition Content Moderation is the default choice for teams already deep in AWS, and if your video is in S3 and your bill goes to the same account, that gravity is real. This page covers where the two genuinely differ. AWS figures are quoted from aws.amazon.com/rekognition/pricing, checked 4 September 2026.

Price

AWS Rekognition Content Moderation: $0.10 per minute of stored video analysed (us-east-1, from AWS's own pricing example — 50,000 min/month × $0.10/min = $5,000/month).

SafeReel: €0.020 per video-minute, billed per second, with billing capped at 20 minutes per video regardless of the file's actual length.

Video length SafeReel AWS Rekognition
3 minutes €0.06 $0.30
20 minutes €0.40 $2.00
90 minutes €0.40 (capped) $9.00
3 hours €0.40 (capped) $18.00

At 50,000 minutes a month of mixed-length video the difference is the kind that shows up in a board deck, not a rounding error.

Free tier: read the expiry date

AWS gives 60 free minutes of video analysis a month — for the first 12 months after account creation only. After that it is $0.10/min from the first minute.

SafeReel's free tier is 100 video-minutes a month, ongoing, plus 1,000 image checks. It does not expire.

Your video has to live in S3

Rekognition's stored-video APIs read from an S3 bucket in the same region. If your media sits on Cloudflare R2, a CDN, another cloud, or your own origin, you copy it into S3 first — paying the transfer, the storage, and the operational cost of keeping a second copy in sync and then deleting it.

SafeReel fetches from a public URL, including presigned S3 and R2 URLs. The video stays where it already is. See the S3 and R2 guide — it uses a presigned GET so the object never becomes public.

Where AWS Rekognition is the better choice

Where SafeReel is the better choice

Scope, stated plainly

SafeReel does not offer CSAM detection, makes no age determinations, and does not classify non-explicit nudity or swimwear. It does not do text moderation or live streams. If you need those, Rekognition or a broader platform is the right call.

A reasonable way to decide

Take 200 videos from your own library — the awkward ones, not the obvious ones — and run them through both. SafeReel's free tier covers 100 video-minutes a month and AWS's covers 60 in year one, which is usually enough to see where each one disagrees with your human reviewers. That disagreement rate, on your own content, is worth more than any vendor's published number, including ours.
