SafeReel vs Google Cloud Video Intelligence

Google's Video Intelligence API includes explicit content detection, and it has the most generous free allowance of any provider in this category. That makes it a genuinely good default at low volume — and the comparison gets more interesting above it. Google figures are quoted from cloud.google.com/video-intelligence/pricing, checked 4 September 2026.

Price

Google Video Intelligence, explicit content detection: free for the first 1,000 minutes per month, then $0.10 per minute.

SafeReel: €0.020 per video-minute, billed per second, with billing capped at 20 minutes per video. Free tier is 100 video-minutes a month.

Below roughly 1,000 minutes a month, Google is free and SafeReel is not. Say so plainly: if you scan under 1,000 minutes a month and your video is already in Google Cloud Storage, Google is cheaper. The crossover is above that line.

Monthly volume Google SafeReel
500 min $0 ~€8 (100 free + 400 × €0.02)
2,000 min $100 ~€38
20,000 min $1,900 ~€398
20,000 min as 200 × 100-min films $1,900 €80 (20-min cap each)

The last row is the point. Google bills every minute of a long video; SafeReel bills at most 20 per file however long it runs.

Your video has to live in GCS

Video Intelligence reads from a Google Cloud Storage URI, or you inline the bytes in the request. Media hosted on S3, R2, a CDN or your own origin has to be copied into GCS first.

SafeReel fetches from any public URL — including presigned S3 and R2 URLs — so the file stays where it already lives.

Buckets, not verdicts

Google returns likelihood levels (VERY_UNLIKELY through VERY_LIKELY) for adult content per frame. You decide the threshold and how to aggregate frames into a decision about the video. That flexibility is useful if you want to tune it, and it is work if you do not.

SafeReel returns a single verdict for the video — clean or nsfw — with the aggregation already done and measured. The accuracy report states what that decision rule achieves: 95.5% accuracy, 92.2% recall and 0.41% false positives on 1,089 production videos.

Where Google is the better choice

Scope, stated plainly

SafeReel does not offer CSAM detection, makes no age determinations, does not classify non-explicit nudity or swimwear, and does not do text moderation, speech transcription or object detection. It is one classifier doing one job.

The honest recommendation

If you are under Google's free tier and already in GCS, use Google. Come back when your volume crosses it, when your videos get long, or when your media stops living in one cloud — those are the three places this comparison flips, and all three tend to arrive at once.
